Colon Cancer Symptoms

There are many different colon cancer symptoms that you should be aware of in order to detect this condition early enough for successful treatment. The colon is an organ in the human body that measures approximately three and a half to four feet long. This organ is shaped like a tube, and is actually quite muscular. You can find this organ at the end of the area of the small intestines. The colon actually extends down all the way to the anus. Cancer in this area can result in many complications to the overall health of the individual. Here, we will explore colon cancer symptoms so that you may be aware of what to look for if you suspect there are problems with this organ.

The Functions of the Colon

There are many different functions of the colon. Medical professionals have recently found, however, that this organ serves three main functions. These are:

1. The colon takes the nutrients from the foods that are consumed, and then digests the foods appropriately.

2. This organ is vital when it comes to creating the fecal matter that is eliminated from the body by absorbing the liquids and electrolytes from the foods that pass through the area.

3. When we consume food, the body stores and then eliminated fecal matter from the body. The colon plays an important role in this process.

What Causes Colon Cancer?

There are a number of potential culprits when it comes to the causes of colon cancer. The main culprit is typically a group of cells that are considered to be “abnormal” in the area of the glands inside the large intestines. These are referred to as “adenomatous polyps”. These are represented as growths that normally exhibit a large side. The only time in which they reduce in size is when a level of degeneration is experienced. Colon cancer typically develops in an individual before they reach the age of 40. However, it should be understood that, regardless of age, this cancer can still develop. Many people also develop cancer of the large intestines when they have the susceptibility in their genes.

Colon Cancer Symptoms

As stated previously, there are a number of symptoms when it comes to cancer of the colon. The following details these symptoms:

1. Many individuals may find that there is bleeding that comes from the rectal area. This is often most evident when stools are passed.

2. Anemia is often associated with this type of cancer. This is a low iron level in the blood. People who have pale skin, and experience fatigue on a regular basis may be suffering from anemia that is related to cancer of the large intestines.

3. One may find that they are vomiting quite often, with no known cause. Nausea is often experienced on a regular basis.

4. Many have expressed the fact that after there is a bowel movement, that it feels as if they are not “finished”.

5. Weight loss that cannot be determined to have a cause is often linked to the cancer. In addition to this, many may find that they are experiencing swelling in the abdomen area as the weight drops.

While there are a number of symptoms that can be experienced, those listed here are the most common colon cancer symptoms. If you find that you have any of these, you should make an appointment with your doctor as soon as you are able.
